I think the vesa driver is limited to the modes that are in the bios. Sounds like that mode is not in there, but I don't know much about the vesa driver.
As for the "nv" driver not restoring the console correctly, perhaps CVS works better. I don't have access to one of those laptops at the moment so I can't check it out. Mark.
