I don't think anyone "didn't want" to directly connect the printer
to the ethernet network, and that would be a simple solution.

However, the printer in question has no built-in ethernet port and
would need a bridge to do so. Such items are often hard to find and
may cost too much for such an old printer. Printer sharing, if the
attached computers are compatible, would be "free" and if one has 
the computers running anyway (as I have three or four running most
of the time) would be convenient.
