You may need to run nvidia-xconfig, it is a GUI that configures nVidia

I would say that the least amount of problems will be with the open
source driver.  The binary only one periodically causes me headaches on
a real time kernel.  The downside is that it may not support all the
features or resolutions that your card does.

If you need 3d performance, the latest ATI cards have an open source 3d
driver.  Also note that the open source driver is *not* compatible with
older ATI devices, it is onlWhile not as mature as the Intel ones, this
is certainly a workable option.  At the present time, nVidia would be my
absolute *last* choice for video cards.
