Correct.  Just as your credit limit lets you spend more money than you 
actually have.  There are drawbacks though, and the main drawback of 
swap, is loss of speed. More RAM (think 2-4 Gb) is much better for 
performance.

You are already using effect busses, I'm sure.  Some effects are more 
processor hungry, and you can try to either use them less, or try some 
alternatives.  Use "top" to find the culprits.

There is unfortunately always some physical limit to your processing 
power, and I believe you have found it.
