Hi Fred :)

I won't keep all that mails off-list any more, Quentin seems to reply
also to mails he got off-list.
If you're writing to some other people off-list too and we all give you
hints, without knowing the hints of the others, this can cause confusion.

It's a myth that Fluxbox is a help, if GNOME or KDE are using to much
resources to be fine for real-time audio usage, making videos of the
desktop etc., even if Fluxbox does use less resources, it has not a huge
effect for usages like this on a machine with less resources.

You should try ION2 or maybe a similar frame based WM without a DE.

At least GNOME will use more RAM than ION2 does.

What I did for my 64 Studio needed to run an proprietary application
that e.g. compiled a driver, but didn't compile a new kernel. Now my 64
Studio is broken and because one of Ubuntu's bad originalities is to
apply an opaqueness we know from Windows to Linux, I don't know how to
fix it.

Anyway, you asked Quentin if another distro might solve your troubles.
With a probability bordering on certainty it won't solve your troubles.

I don't remember if you once give information about your hardware. Can
you please (again) write what mobo, CPU (type and speed), graphics (type
and on-board or slot), how much RAM and which audio device or devices
you're using? I guess I remember that you're using 1GB RAM, right?

Cheers,
Ralf
