Some minutes ago I turned of my television, because I be out of patience
with interviewed DJs.

Even DJs still using the Technics MK II and not only the laptop, doing
good backspinning etc., felt bothered by noise control for discos,
because they want it louder. One DJ told that it's funny, that he has
got ear noise after work, so that he isn't able to sleep.

I listened to chart music that has headroom watching the meters, there
were loud and silent parts for the meters, but the overall impression I
have is, that there are no dynamic accents, it sounds as if the meters
would stay in one position.

I guess Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Mike Watt etc. play music that became
popular for today peer groups, that have the same interests like peer
groups dancing to the music of Lady Gaga. I don't like discos, but
around 10 years ago I sometimes visited clubs that played music from
Dinosaur Jr. to Tool and even Faith No More. I was very angry, because
they played the music with extreme clipping, an such extend clipping
that there was distortion and no dynamics any more. My then-girlfriend
wanted me to visit with her those clubs and sometimes I did.

Never heard the Dinosaur Jr. album, but I guess they purposed to do it
that way. Other bands like The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Monster Magnet
today are playing the same sort of songs again and again, they don't
release any good new compositions any more.

If you want to sell pop music, you shouldn't do it similar to Bob Katz's
way ;).

"Independent music" today is a mainstream music style ;), some
"independent music" always was mainstream, The Great Rock'n'Roll Swindle
wasn't Malcolm McLaren's first big deal ;).

I only wonder that people seems to listen in different ways to the same
music. While it made me angry to listen to distorted and earaches
causing music in discos and clubs, I always wanted to leave this places
right after entering, other people liked it that way. I'm even fine with
chartbreakers, "Under The Bridge" (Chili Peppers) or "Sledgehammer"
(Gabriel), btw. you can hear a bad adjusted compressor working for
"Sledgehammer".

To have some songs in a special mixing style or composing style isn't
worth, it only becomes worth, when listening to one song after another,
done in the same style. Is there any successful musical project, but The
Beatles, doing over a long time different styles? I don't think there
are many projects.

Cheers,
Ralf
