It comes down to the tradeoff between the costs and benefits

So what would you propose?
-- scrapping the whiteboard and implementing multicast so we still
have DAD
-- getting rid of DAD completely and just pray
or maybe make the whiteboard optional, but what does that mean?
-- the ER can announce "no whiteboard today" and all nodes go to "just
pray" mode
-- even if the ER does a whiteboard, nodes are allowed to not bother
(which breaks the below)
So maybe they are optional at the ER but nodes still must use them if
available?
Whiteboards don't just do DAD.
What else is expendable?
-- you already said the 8 bytes additional compression are maybe
expendable.
-- the ability to suppress messages at the ER that address non-
existent nodes (which saves a lot of RREQ work)?
Looking at the whole picture, I personally think there are some quite
real benefits.
But I'd love to hear other opinions.
We only can make the right tradeoff if we understand the impact on the
deployment scenarios.
