We run exim as our primary MX (as does mailcleaner) our "storage/

I'm not sure what you mean by that. Exim has always been fairly
delivery independent. We recently switched from mbox to Maildir on
our
servers, and we're now offering it to our clients. We use Dovecot to
deliver POP and IMAP from Maildir.
Exim's maildir++ implementation had some issues that postfix was
superior too in the past. Those issues are now resolved and were also
keyed to issues with other software. At the time because of those
issues I chose postfix as the final delivery agent rather then exim
as I had a fully functioning postfix install already using ldap for
message directory lookups etc.
