That's empirically not true.  I have disk caching in neoventi and it
absolutely does help with the index as well, I can turn it off to
prove it :)

Not as _much_, but it does.  Note that each cached block, in venti too
IIRC, contains 8KiB.  It contains several unrelated index buckets;
something on the order of 250 index entries.  That's enough to index
nearly 1MiB.

If you scan through 100MiB of data, we may well only do 100-200 disk
reads from the index.

It's not great, but it's not that bad.
