Basically this.

Either you have the index on the same disk as the arenas, and the
arenas _will_ cause more wear; or, you have it on a separate disk, and
that disk can be treated as consumable.

I'm thinking about how to make it easy to build the index on startup
into a ramdisk, but this is not a priority right now.
