A quick philosophical point. Microsoft/Windows is a religion, in the sense of an organised hierarchy of authority with a deity (real or imaginary) on top and the worshippers at the bottom. The accolytes are privvy to secrets they use to keep the masses from questioning the religious dogma that keeps the system going. Microsoft more or less stumbled in this position the way Christianity did and adjusted to suit. The Red-Hat did the same. Etc. Should Plan 9 do the same, wittingly? I vote against, but intellectually, not with Darwinian survival of the fittest in mind. Also, I don't think one can do this rationally, too much depends on grasping and fulfilling the needs of the underlying community without compromising authority. ++L
