Start>Settings>Control Panel>Display>Settings

Is the slider to the right set to 800 x 600 pixels, if not slide it right to 
800 x 600 setting, you
will need to reboot to effect this change.  Once rebooted check to see if you 
now have 256 colours
available, if not get back to us again and tell us the type of monitor you are 
using

It's not giving me the option of 256 colors in the "Display
settings"  is there something else I need to change in order for it
to give me the 256 option?
