This isn't at all how these CPUs work. The DualCore CPUs, available from Intel and AMD don't give you 2x the MHz rating. (I'll explain in a moment.) In addition, the MHz rating really doesn't affect computer performance as much as you think, many other systems come into play to determine the performance and reliability of a PC.
HyperThreading utilizes the inactive portions of the CPU to simulate a second CPU. But this doesn't create the performance of a true DualCore because only a portion of the CPU is available to the second 'fake' CPU. In additon, software appies too, see below. DualCore does give a complete second CPU, so you basicall have a dual CPU system. Except in the real world this doesn't yield 100% of extra performance. Two CPUs means the system has to divide up the resources to had it over to the software. The catch: one 'thread' can only live on one CPU at a time. some applications are 'multi-threaded' and can subdivid tasks over multiple CPUs. This isn't true for all applications. Those applicaitons that aren't multi-threaded will only run on one CPU, therefore the other will sit idle. On the other hand if you have another application that needs CPU time then this is where you'll get some use out of it. Some Operating Systems, like Windows 98, aren't multi-threaded so you will only utilize one CPU, period. BTW there's no plans for a Triple Core CPU so don't hold your breath. AMD's DualCore technology is currently superior to Intels, so you might want to look at the AMD64 X2 processor. --- In [email protected], "Matt" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > > > What is this new Hyper-Threading that everyone is talking about. It is > mark on boxes as HT. > > Thay have this new Pentium 4 D 820 and the Pentium 4 D 670 is it any > good ?
