Thanks for that. Will try Memtest86 but if no fault is found what is
slowing down the start up of each program? As I said, once started and
closed, re-starting of any program is more or less instantaneous. The
machine boots up with XP as normal.

Original post:

When I start my PC from cold, every program, OE, Firefox, Autoroute
etc. take several long seconds to open; Paint Shop Pro 10 takes 40
seconds!! If I then close any of those programs and then re-open
them they open instantly. Is it anything to do with virtual memory?

I have defragged, deleted unwanted programs, scanned for viruses,
adware, trojans etc. but nothing found. The system did work OK but not
any more; suggestions please!
