If you switch the electrical power to your router off frequently it
won't make any difference but if your ISP has managed to increase
connection speed it wont be detected by your router until you restart
your router or just pull the phone line out for 15 seconds and plug in
again.

Try this link http://www.bt.com/broadband/ assuming you use British
Telecom and see what the maximum available speed your line is capable
of. How far from the exchange, in kilometres, are you?
