I have a 10 gig hard drive which is about full.
Due to the age of computer, I think I may have to add a 2.0 usb port
as the two I have are prob 1.1 if I go external drive.
HOWEVER, I am going to try to go internal drive first and am reading
up on it.
My friend gave me a 40gig western digital, which I thought i would
add,so I wouldn't have to do anything to my old drive but move data
and vidio over to the new drive. He said it may have an operating
system on it, so how will my computer know which one to recognize?
I have a secondary ide slot avail so I was thinking of setting the
jumper to single or just a second master(assuming the first drive is
set to master?? It may just be set up as single since it was
originally the only drive.
The other question is will my older mobo, bios, cmos recognize a 40
gig hard drive. I will read up on adding drives in an upgrade book
and/or A+ Book or two this am and then give it a try.
I am very unclear on how to partition and/or format if required
(again, i will read up on this). To format, do I go to safe mode
(tapping f8) or some other type of diagnostic(tapping f1 or delete
during start up?).
Assuming the new drive appears in My Computer, what is my next step?
Try to move some data over? If it works, I am set!
If the data doesn't tranfer, what is my nx step?
If My Computer doesn't recoznize the drive, what if anything can I do
then?
Maybe look for an older 10 or 20 gig harddrive?
Or just buy the 2.0 usb and attach an external drive!
