Thanks Christopher for the detail.

I will google and barnes and noble my questions also but you might be
able to clarrify some of my "how to's"

1-How do I tell the if the older drive in on master/single/slave? It
is on a separate ribbon(coupled with the cd rom) than the new hard
drive.

they are both western digital and I have the jumper setup for the new
one so maybe they are similar?

2-Age of the pc is late 1998.

3-How do I run FDisk? Again I will research this also.

4-The new drive has a command file, and two ibm dos files set up as
file system FAT while my older C drive is set up FAT 32. I hooked it
up just to see if it would spin up and forgot to set the jumper! It
shows 1.00 Gigs instead of 40 gigs so I guess the fix is in the
jumper or "format-just how do I format?" or in the "partition-just
how do I partition the drive?"

5-From your earlier note I see I should Fdisk first(how to?) to
create the new partition.

6-then I should "format-how to?"

7- bios-setup, when booting up I see where I can go to setup! how
will it appear in the bios? Just a second drive noted, E??

8-Transfer data after

    1-FDISK-how?
2-deleting partitions-how? Does Fdisk do that?
    3-Create new partition-how?
    4-set partition to active-how?
5-run format to format the partition-how?

I will start researching at barnes and nobles and google, but
any short cuts on how would be greatly appreciated!
