So you think it is probably not my hard drive? I have run Norton
Systemworks 2003 and Windows XP disk checker. Plus all the malware/
spyware programs I have. I've run the virus checker. So far they have
found nothing. I just ran XP's check disk (or today's version of it)
again last night. The drive isn't making any noise. I have Ad-Aware,
Webroot Spy Sweaper and Sygate firewall running all the time. There is
no spyware, trojans or viruses found on my system.

I've ordered a new hard drive from Newegg, but I can either cancel it
(soon), send it back or keep it because it's larger. I don't know. Can
I have 3 hard drives? I got a 160 GB Seagate for $59. Is that a good
price?

Also, I have discovered that my nVIDIA GeForce MX/MX 400 video driver
is not working. Could this have been the problem? I downloaded the
updated driver from nVIDIA, uninstalled the old driver, and ran the
install, but the yellow quesion mark in Device Manager hasn't changed.
I didn't do the uninstall or reinstall from Safe Mode. Do I need to do
that? I don't know how it got broke in the first place. You wouldn't
have known it's not working because the picture looks great, but upon
reboot during these problems there was a brief message that said
something about if I wanted to install a "3rd party SCSI or RAID
driver", so I checked the Device Manager and found the question mark.

So far, all weekend everything has worked fine.

Thanks so much for your help.

Diane

corrupting data. I have a dual boot with Win98 on C (bad drive) and
WinXP Home on D (newer drive). I never use C for anything anymore
except that XP installed some of it's files on C and seems to need
them. The C drive is about to go out, so since I need more space
anyway I thought I'd go ahead and replace it instead of unplugging the
bad drive and re-installing XP on D (which would then become the new
C). I'm only intermediate; I don't even know if that would work
anyway. All my data is on partitions of my newer drive.

more confused than ever. I looked at Western Digital, Maxtor, and
Seagate drives. It seems that in reading the reviews for each one,
some people love them, and some people say theirs failed within 2 or 3
months and was replaced by a refurbished one with a shorter warrenty.
Now I don't know which one to buy. I just want a reliable cheap one
since it's really a second drive.
