In the old days, pre USB they used Printer parallel cables or Serial type cables, like the ones that were used with modems. I have not used parallel USB cables but they are a special type that go between computers too for the same purpose. They eliminate the need for a NIC, network interface cable on both machine. I think that they also have crossover cables for use with machines that have NICs. But I have not used them either. I have had my computers networked for quite some time which I why I have not used cross over cables in a long time. Another way to transfer files is with a thumb drive, i.e. flash drive. If the file is no larger than the size of the drive, i.e. maybe 1 Gigabyte you copy the filed to the flash drive on one machine, then move it to the other machine and copy it there. We have so many options today. If I am having troubles with my network and the files are larger than a Gig, I can use my USB external drive.
