This seems to me to be clearly a dirty mouse or one with the wrong
drivers. I don't know the exact problem with the disappearing desktop
but if it were me I would simply reinstall the new OS.

I never appreciated that these two matters were related? Catrina also said
her computer is running slow, if she described the problem accurately there
seems to be more than a dirty rodent involved. Also I told her to try another
mouse, and I did tell her to ensure the existing one was properly installed
and it had the correct drivers. I think I had all bases covered. Mice are
so cheap I have a couple of spares, same applies to keyboards.
