Mouse design has changed almost as much as that of computers. OTOH an
old mouse is more likely to work on a new computer than an old computer
is likely to serve the needs of an advanced user. Mice differ in several
ways. One obvious way is whether the mouse has a tail. [That by the way
is how they got the moniker 'mouse'] Cordless mice are little radio
transmitters so they don't need the wires. The most significant
improvement has been the advent of the optical mouse. Instead of a
rubber ball that rotates little wheels to send motion data to the
computer optical mice use light to determine motion, no surface contact
necessary, so dirt on the surface or on the mouse ball are no problem.

As to the reason you can't open a mouse to clean it, that depends on the
type of mouse, and maybe how cheap it is. I haven't used the rubber ball
type mouse in years. I love my optical, cordless mouse, even though it
is a bit hard on batteries.
