In most cases I think that cable is the most expensive broadband, but if 
your community has a cable TV company then they can provide broad band. And 
it is my understanding that they cannot require that you also subscribe to 
their TV service as well.

DSL is the next level but I think that it's avaiability is more 'iffy'. This 
is in part dependent on your distance from the exchange building. Dial up 
seems to be providing faster service than the old dial up but they are still 
the slowest.
Given that distance can be an important part of the equation I would look up 
internet services in your phone bool, then call the providers and get the 
particulars. My brother lives in the little town of Oscoda, MI and his 
options are really limited. And his dial up provider is not much either.
