I also don't think that spyware or viruses or whatever will do all of this.
It just sounds like a tired old machine. I personall think that using System
Restore to go back to an earlier time trumps scans for malware. There's no
benefit to the bad guys in make disable a computer, that could otherwise be
used to send viruses etc
