Allowing Word to rebuild the NORMAL.DOT will revert it to defaults. Not that much is actually in this file, the bulk of it is global styles. If you have existing documents which still maintain a missing style you can use it to re-import it into the NORMAL.DOT file (known as the Global Template). Edit the Style in the document and check the checkbox to add it to the Global Template. This will re-add it to NORMAL.DOT.
