While accepting all the good advice contained in this and Emile's ideas on Backup, I would like to add a couple of observations.
First, backing up to a partition on the same Hard Drive is really not giving total reassurance because HDs can pack up entirely. IMHO it is makes sense to BU to a separate target. Secondly, if you copy all the possible settings and profiles from the computer it will possibly include all those years of corrupted files, bad and unused links, bugs and frankly dross that you have accumulated over months or years of computer and web use. . IMHO only copy personal data that you don't want to lose and possibly those Favorite and email account settings that you are desperate about. You don't need al those free programs you downloaded because you can download them again to your nice clean drive and get the latest version. It is why I don't advocate the use of cloning software. It just clones your problems as well. Some of use actually reformat our hard drives on a regular basis ( I do it about ever 18 months) as an easy method of spring cleaning. This is not a task everyone would want to take on because you do need to have at hand all those original program CDs to reload Windows etc' as well as boot and partition CDs. But it sure helps you learn more about computers. -------Original Message------- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: 01/01/2008 01:52:05 To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [A-1-Computer_Tech] Speaking of BackUps: emi, > The term "backup" seems to imply that you must use a Backup program > which is > a long long way from the truth. Being a person with great interest in language I had to respond. The term 'backup' can be used to describe the result of either a backup program or even manual copying of files to some place where they can be assumed to be safe. You can use the term to mean a back up program or a process.
