I would call that over cautious. CDs actually deteriorate in time anyway.

That is true, but I always have more than one back up set. In fact my
D partition on both PCs are identical. Then I have an external HD with
a thierd copy. I also burn disk copies but these don't get done as
often since the process is more difficult as far as I can tell. Right
now I am trying to cull the files on my D partitions so that the DVD
backup will be smaller.
