Keep in mind that most computer user groups have members with a wide
range of knowledge and experience. If your question does not make it
clear how much experience you have the reply may not contain as much
information as you need.

First off,I wrote a lengthy reply about back ups a while back.
Sometimes it helps to read old messages on a particular subject, you
have to go to the group web site to do that. Also check to see whether
there are any files in the file section related to what you need help
for, some files are information and tips others are programs, some
about solving problems.

What kind of backups are you trying to do, your data or the OS and
applications. Data files can be backed up using any simple file copy
program. My Favorite is Karen Kenworthies, Replicator. The site is:
http://www.karenware.com/powertools/powertools.asp
Click on free programs. You can download the complete set of Utilities.

Or click" http://www.karenware.com/powertools/ptreplicator.asp
To download the replicator.

Backing up your whole drive is a bit more difficult since copy
programs will not copy the OS files that are running. There are many
commercial ahd shareware programs that will do this, try Googling for
backup.

You still have to decide which files to back up and where to back them
up. If you want to back up the C partition where your OS lives you
need a program like Norton Ghost, that's what I use, it is a
commercial program that costs around $80.
