Flash drives are smaller in size, disk size and highly portable. External
USB hard drives can be very large in disk size, like internal desktop hard
drives. They are also significantly faster than flash drives, I think.
USB external drive enclosures using a 5 1/2" drive need an external power
source, and are obviously a bit bulky.
But those using the 3 1/2" laptop drives are much smaller (though nowhere
near as small the flash drives), and many can run without an external power
source. Thus they're fairly portable. I use several of these for my backups.
Also, GB-for-GB the external USB drives are actually cheaper. For instance,
for the cost of a 8GB flash drive, you can get a 60 or 80 GB external 3 1/2"
USB drive. [This is a rough estimate, just to make the point].
