Do you have desktop speakers, are they working OK? You cannot use desktop and headset together unless you have a double outlet plug.
To adjust and chose the headset go into Control Panel and choose the Classic View on left. Now click the Sound icon to choose Playback. Also click the sound icon in the system tray and adjust the mixer sound.
