Well, this problem originally started (the black screen) while Windows
was already booted and I had a normal desktop. When I clicked on the
Firefox icon, the screen went black, never to be revived again. And
somehow my boot.ini was missing. It's just weird. I will try to give
it some time though. Heck, that would sure be the 'easy' (temporary)
fix. :)

Yes, you can disable the startup of some of your programs in msconfig.
I think I've heard it's better to do it through the configuration of
the actual program though. You can also remove some from the startup
folder. I have done all this. Some of those pesky things don't give
you any way to disable other than through msconfig. I've now
discovered that when I run Advanced Window Care (free Microsoft
download) it does a 'Startup' scan as part of it's scan, then shows a
list of your questionable and non-questionable startup items. You can
then check the ones you want to disable, ignore, or mark as trusted.
It's a pretty good little program. It performs the following scans:
Spyware Removal, Security Defense, Registry Fix, System Optimization,
Startup Manage, Privacy Sweep, and Junk Files Clean.
