Ian,

I would say that might be it (the SP3 idea), but it happened before I
installed SP3.  If it happens again I'll try that though.  Thanks a lot.

 Oh, and it was a USB to PS2.  The way it reacts is the pointer is on the
screen but won't move, just remains stationery.
