To the original poster. When things are this bad the only thing that I  
know to do is to stick the mfg recover disks in the machine and boot.  
If you are lucky you will have a repair option instead of a reformat  
option only. It the only option is the latter you will lose all of  
your data if you do it.

I don't recall whether you tried going to F8 Safe Mode. That starts up  
with a minimum # of drivers to avoid software that may be causing a  
problem.
