Chip-maker AMD is to divide its operation into two distinct areas and accept
some serious multi-billion financial backing from two Abu Dhabi investment
firms, the company has announced.

The seperate arms will be AMD, that will be "financially stronger and more
focused on design and development" and new, part-owned by AMD, manufacturing
company "The Foundry Company".

AMD and the Advanced Technology Investment Company said The Foundry Company,
will "address the growing global demand for independent, leading-edge
semiconductor manufacturing".

The Foundry Company will be based at an Dresden, Germany as well as get a
new "state-of-the-art facility" in New York.

I don't mean that the AMD processor is split. The company has split,

Details I don't remember.

And yes the reason was to 'keep ahead' but my explanation was I think

More specific.

By splitting the one part of the company concentrates on developing

Processors. The other half is about not only manufacturing them but I

Think they can make money manufacturing stuff for other companies. The

Cranky Geeks told the story but I don't recall the details, I think

Some kind of merger was involved, which I guess meant the influx of

Some cash.
