When you have a multiple component system like a computer, router and
modem and of course the signal coming into the modem, AND all the
cabling as well. If you can it might help to connect the modem
directly to the computer. And if you don't have several computers then
the router is not even necessary. The router is needed only to
distribute internet to more than one computer. The configuration might
change if you connect the modem directly to the computer so you should
power down the modem and the computer, then power up the modem, then
the computer. Watch the signal LEDs on the modem, it should be
flashing to show that you have signal. Sometimes the modem and/or the
router need to be rebooted, as in power down then up. And this may
solve problems. But cables and connectors can cause problems too.
Check the CAT5/6 cable going from modem or router to the computer NIC
input. Those cables can sometimes get damages and/or loose. If you
have another Cat5 cable to try that would be a good idea. Those cables
are almost like the cheap telephone cables except that they have 6
wires instead of 4. And they are cheap. Replace if necessary.
If this connection brings back your internet and it stays, leave it
that way for awhile to make certain that it does not change. If it
comes back but then goes away, I'd say that maybe your ISP may be the
source of the problem as well as the source for help. If you have a
fairly long time good connection then you can being the router back
into the picture.
