They can't find you, you have to surf to their web site, then they recognize you unless you delete the cookies.
No, nothing bad will happen if you delete your cookies. You can change your Internet Security setting to not allow cookies. I'm in Ubuntu right now so I can't look up how so I'll leave that to someone still running Windows.
