I have difficulty believing that any software that is not written to
specifically damage hardware could actually do that. To put it another
way, software can only do what it is written to do. If you wrote
software to intervene in the hard drive controller, maybe it would be
possible for it to damage a hard drive, but I seriously doubt that
anyone without a knowledge of HD control software could damage a
drive. And I can't see how anyone would benefit by creating such
software.
