First I suggest that you accept the machine plus a copy of your choice  
of the two OSes. Personally, I think that most of the complaints about  
Vista have little to do with the actual OS but with the rumors. I use  
Vista with absolutely no problems. It is known to be more secure than  
XP, although I have no security problems with XP either. There are  
several pros who say that there is NO reason not to get Vista. Unless  
of course you want an OS that is exactly like the one you are  
accustomed to. Vista IS a bit different. But XP is nearing the end of  
it's life in terms of MS support. And even if it isn't Vista's life  
will be longer in that respect.

I personally would choose Vista.
