Teddy,

> Virus-related perhaps?

I tend to consider the jump to malware as the cause of mysterious
misbehaving computers as a case of ignoring the fact that computers
have their own array of malefactors. We tend to forget that they are
after all very complex devices, in spite of the fact that they now can
be had for extremely low prices. And the computer manufactures have
not helped the situation. Maybe their need to get the prices down
explain part of that. On the other hand, imagine if auto manufactures
had allowed autos to remain as troublesome as computers still are?
We'd still have a cadre' of folks who would still be driving.. er I
mean riding horseback or horse and buggies.

I have to admit that my strategy has been as follows: One keep all
data files and personal configuration detail backed up. I also create
a clone of my C drive. And I update it periodically. And when thins
start going Gally West, I just reverse clone C. That or use Windows
System Restore.

Jim
