One of the worst things that can happen to an inkjet printer is intermittent use. If they are used on a regular basis, the print heads usually stay fairly clean. However, when they sit around too long, the print heads can clog up. Sometimes the manufacturers come up with a good design that minimizes the problem, but then you won't use up the ink cartridges as fast and they really hate that--they make their money on ink, not printers.
You might try using the printer at least once every couple of weeks to help the situation. Try printing a very short line of multicolored text that would cause each cartridge/printhead to squirt a tiny amount--just enough to keep the heads "damp" with ink.
