I'm not even sure I know what you're talking about, but circuit boards 
have thin lines of conductive metal "painted" on them to connect all the 
components.  These are usually either gold or silver. If the paint wears 
off the electrical connection is broken and the board won't work.  I 
dunno if the "circles" you mention are made up of this material?  If 
it's just gunky it should still work I think. But if there's a break in 
the paint you've got no connection.  I don't think there's a way to 
re-paint the break, so you might be outta luck.
