Was built around 2003 and does have a variable speed fan.  A couple 
reviews mentioned that the fan was very noisy, and I think one said it 
was a 2 speed fan - so changing it wouldn't help the noise.  You should 
be able to set it to run permanently on hi or low in the bios.
