I absolutely agree. What one needs to be able to say in abc is "these are
the alternate chords". Then, various formatting options can be provided by
display programs. The basic idea is to separate the concept of what
something is (musically) from how it should look. That way, I don't have to
retype the abc in order to get various different output types for different
purposes.
(We do already have some consensus on the alternate chord notation with
parentheses, but maybe the current discussion is leading us into something
else, perhaps better.) As a big user of chords and chord charts, I'm
pleased to see us thinking about these questions.
