Ah, I see. In that case, please ignore my previous message. :)
As far as I know, no current music programs use an XML-based format as
their standard input format. However, I'm about to patch Denemo
(http://denemo.sourceforge.net) so that it does. Currently it attempts
to import/export its slightly hacked subset of Lilypond with some
success. I just patched it so that it can export ABC (plug :) ),
although I'm not sure if the maintainer has submitted the patch to CVS
yet. However, having "Denemo's subset of Lilypond" as a native file
format is definitely suboptimal, since Lilypond is even harder to parse
than ABC and maintaining and enhancing that code for every new feature
that Denemo adds is much more painful than adding a tag or two to the XML.
