You're right, of course.  I'd thought of that way back when
someone  first  suggested  the middle= gimmick.  But then I
forgot about it.

There are a lot of uses for  a  staff  with  other  than  4
lines.  I've seen drum notation with 1, 2 and 3 lines. Then
there are the various things called tablatures.
