I'm helping a friend move over 700 chemical documents over to linux. We want to put
these documents on the web for free use for everyone, but we're having some problems.

We're sick to death of dealing with CIH viruses (that threaten to destroy the
motherboards), and with buggy Win98 computers.

Every 4 months I do a full format and reinstall of Win98, just so that my friend can
do some _real work_.

That's insanity.

This has been going on for at least 4 years, and now I feel like I know enough linux
and programming to beat this.

This is the type of documents we have:

MS Word97
Wordperfect 2000 (also known as 9)

All documents include equations, superscript and subscripts, and a lot of chemical
formulae, as well as graphics.

I'm going to make a simple front end to LaTeX using Tcl/Tk, and key bindings so its
easy to write chemical formulae.

Here are some solutions that I've thought of:

1) Export everything to HTML using the export features, and then convert that HTML to
LaTeX using a script that I'll write. This means that for over 700 documents I gotta
click, File->Save As->HTML and then run the script over the doc.

2) Either make(!!!) or find a decent program to convert MSWord97 and WP9 to LaTeX
(including saving all elements of the documents that I mentioned previously.

3) Convert all documents to WP5.1 and then convert to LaTeX, since there are some
programs that can do this.

I would love and appreciate any feedback on how best to do this.

You'll not only be helping me, but also some students who will be able to learn
chemistry online, for free.

Thanks again,
Ro Wiijkejak
