Jean: Don't know how things work in the US, in India, especially advertising and copywriting business, most freelancers aren't paid properly at all. When I was freelancing, I used to deal with several agencies based in my own city, I would slog my brains out to get something like Rs 2000 for writing one brochure or one issue of a news letter, but in most cases, they pay an advance (a quarter of the agreed amount) and never bother to pay the rest after the work is done and get another writer to do the rest of the work (especially in the case of news letters). Union is a good idea, but both on and off line, visually challenged people must guard themselves against such agencies and should never fall a prey for the glorious promises they give you.
