As long as the girl knows that you may become blind some day in future, just go ahead with the marriage. Once the parents know that she is happy with you after marriage, they will reconcile with the reality. Attending social gatherings is always optional. If you are confident of managing things without her parents' support, just go ahead. But make sure you and the girl try your level best to convince the parents. Its worth trying a million times to convince parents, even it means taking time. After all, their concern is understandable.
