I happened to experience Windows Narrator on an office laptop during the past week having my laptop's hard disk crashed. I was browsing Outlook and Teams on my phone however, learnt about a spare laptop availability with my team. I got hold of it and thought of navigating it using Windows Narrator given JAWS download and installation restrictions due to the organization's IT and security policy. I found that Narrator has developed quite well with significant options like Read Window, Battery Status announcement, web page navigation, AI-based Image description, etc. I was able to successfully perform the following tasks independently: 1. Turn Narrator On/Off using CTRL+WINDOWS+ENTER. 2. Pair my Bluetooth headset 3. Browse freedomscientific site to check if JAWS can be downloaded. The download was blocked by the organization's IT policy. 4. Customize Narrator settings like Auto Start on Windows Login screen, Narrator Speech Rate, Natural Voice, Typing Echo and so on. 5. Sign in to Outlook365 through multi-factor authentication (MFA) in Google Chrome browser. a. Browse through mail folders and access mails b. Respond to mails with message text in body and attachments While these tasks were fairly difficult using the older versions of Narrator, these could be performed easily with the current version (around May 2025 release). Looking forward to the day when Narrator is fully developed and dependency on third-party commercial/free software is reduced. This will potentially make Windows accessibility easily available to all sections of visually challenged users across the globe. I urge you to try out the current version of Narrator and share your experiences and tips to extract more benefits from this in-built Speech software. ALL the Best!
