I guess they are recovery files, and are used during recovery process. So their creation would depend if the checkbox "Save Auto recover info every" is checked . This checkbox is found in Tools menu > options > save tab.

Generally such files disappear once you close the original file. I haven't tried out with any setting that enables/disables removal of such files after closing the original one.
