No, you won't lose data. I have deleted these files myself. Word creates these temporary files when we open the original files again. Though I don't know exactly, perhaps ms word creates these temporary files as a backup in case something unusual happens, say a powercut. In such cases ms word offers us a recovered file from these backups. This is just an idea, maybe I am wrong. Besides, utilities like cleanup delete these .tmp files.

Generally such files disappear once you close the original file. I haven't tried out with any setting that enables/disables removal of such files after closing the original one.
